Differences between therapy/counseling and coaching:

Qualifications and Training:

Clinician Counselors/Therapists: These professionals are licensed and have formal education in mental health, often with specialized training.  Coaches may have training in coaching, but not necessarily in mental health. Their backgrounds can vary, with many drawing on personal experiences and level of formal education in mental health is generally less than that of licensed clinicians.

Approach and Focus:

Clinical Counselors/Therapists: They focus on emotional and psychological healing, exploring past traumas, unresolved issues, and the deeper emotional impact of loss. Their approach is often exploratory and therapeutic. Coaching is more action-based and less about delving into emotional processing.

Scope of Practice:

Counselors/Therapists: They can diagnose and treat mental health conditions related to or coexisting with presenting problems such as grief, for example depression or anxiety disorders. Clinical therapists are highly trained in providing therapeutic modalities like cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, attachment-based therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, solution-focused therapy, complicated/prolonged grief therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy.  Coaches are not trained to diagnose or treat mental health disorders.

Regulation and Oversight:

Clinician Counselors/Therapists: The mental health field is regulated by state and professional licensing boards with established standards of practice and ethics.  Coaching is less regulated, leading to a wider variation in the quality and effectiveness of practitioners.
